Cabbagetown - What's in a Name?
Amira and Brixton live in an area of Toronto known as Cabbagetown. Cabbagetown has one of the most unusual names in Toronto and one may ask how does a neighourhood get named after a leafy green vegetable.
Originally it was known as the village of DonVale, a working class area near the Don river. The name Cabbagetown was used derisively by snooty Torontonians since the area was occupied mainly with Irish immigrants who planted vegetables in their front yards.
Traditionally Cabbagetown was a very poor area, it has always had problems with drugs and prostitution. Ironically the homes in Cabbagetown are selling for more than a million dollars but drugs and prostitution still flurish on the fringes of the area.
